Frequently Asked Questions

When you choose to buy guns online in Australia, questions regarding legality, transport, and state-specific paperwork are common. Below are the most frequently asked questions for 2026, designed to help you navigate the process with ease and total compliance.

Purchasing & Legality

1. Is it legal to buy a gun online in Australia?

Yes. However, it is not “mail-order” in the traditional sense. You can browse, select, and pay for a firearm online, but the physical transfer must be completed through a Licensed Firearms Dealer (LFD). The firearm is shipped from our secure warehouse to an LFD of your choice, where you collect it after presenting your valid licence and Permit to Acquire (PTA).

2. Do I need a licence before I buy a gun online?

You can technically pay for a firearm without a licence (for example, to secure a rare model while your application is processing), but you cannot take possession of it until you hold a valid firearms licence for that category. Most dealers will hold the firearm for you, though storage fees may apply if the wait is extensive.

3. What is a “Permit to Acquire” (PTA)?

A PTA is a document issued by your state’s police firearms registry that gives you permission to buy a specific firearm.

  • First Firearm: Usually involves a mandatory 28-day waiting period.

  • Subsequent Firearms: In many states, if you already own a firearm in that category, the waiting period may be reduced or waived in 2026.

Shipping & Collection

4. Can you ship a gun directly to my house?

yes. Under Australian law, firearms must be sent to a Licensed Firearms Dealer from there to you address. Accessories like cleaning kits, scopes, and bipods, however, can be shipped directly to your door.

5. How do I choose a “Transfer Dealer”?

During the checkout process on our site, you will be asked to nominate a local gun shop. We handle the “dealer-to-dealer” transfer. You simply visit your local shop once the firearm arrives, pay their nominal transfer fee (usually $50–$150), and finalize your paperwork.

6. How much does shipping cost for a firearm?

Shipping costs vary based on your location and the weight of the firearm. Generally, we use specialized, insured couriers who are authorized to transport regulated goods. Expect to pay between $50 and $150 for interstate transfers.

2026 Legislative Updates

7. How do the 2026 “Bondi” reforms affect my online purchase?

The 2026 updates introduced several key changes you should be aware of:

  • Category Reclassifications: Several straight-pull and pump-action rifles have moved from Category A/B to Category C. Ensure your licence matches the new 2026 classifications before buying.

  • Ownership Caps: Some states (notably NSW) have introduced “caps” on the number of firearms a recreational shooter can own. Check your local state limits to ensure you aren’t exceeding your quota.

  • Mandatory Inspections: In many jurisdictions, a safe storage inspection is now required before your PTA for a new firearm is approved.

8. What is the National Firearms Register (NFR)?

Launched in 2026, the NFR is a real-time database that links all state registries. When you buy from us, we log the serial number and your details directly into the NFR. This ensures total transparency and speeds up the verification process between dealers in different states.

Ammunition & Accessories

9. Can I buy ammunition online?

Yes, but with strict verification. In 2026, states like Queensland and NSW require digital licence verification before we can dispatch ammunition. Ammunition must be shipped via “Dangerous Goods” couriers, which can be more expensive than standard post.

10. Can I buy high-capacity magazines?

Magazines are now more strictly regulated under the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956 (updated Jan 2026). Magazines with a capacity of more than 10 rounds for rifles are generally restricted to specific licence categories (Category C or D). We cannot ship high-capacity magazines to Category A/B licence holders.

Returns & Technical Support

11. What happens if the gun is faulty?

All firearms sold by [Your Business Name] are covered by the Australian Consumer Law. If a firearm has a major manufacturing defect, we will coordinate a dealer-to-dealer return at our expense for repair or replacement. See our Refund Policy for more details.

12. Can I cancel my order if my PTA is rejected?

If the police refuse your Permit to Acquire, we will refund your purchase. However, we typically deduct an administration and storage fee (usually around $100) to cover the costs of holding the item and reversing the NFR registration.
